“Aetoí oi psychés tous sta ouránia
páno apó Tsoúka ki Elatiá
agnantévoun ta kopádia sta roumánia
kai stin Karítsa ríchnoun mia matiá”
“Eagles, their souls in the heavens
Hover above Tsouka and Elatias
Watching over flocks in the scrubs
And on Karitsa throw a glance”
So reads the promotional blurb on the back cover, a tantalising taste of what the reader can expect. That’s why all of us -villagers, descendants, and friends- the world over can’t wait to read the new book authored by distinguished Laconian writer, Vasilis Vlachakos.
The book titled "The Eagles of Karitsa" is 310 pages in length and focuses on the lives and times of legendary villagers, barmpa-Michalis Roumanos (1884-1981) and his brother Konstanti-Roumanos (1864-1955).
Vasilis Vlachakos, the award-winning Laconian poet and writer, taught at the school in Karitsa in the early 70s and shares wonderful memories of the time. He recollects having 40 or so children in the one-teacher-school. The villagers warmly embraced the then young teacher, and though at first he confesses feeling “exiled", he soon enough got to respect the locals as his own people. "For these folk and for the village, I had to write something. I owed it to them!” he says.
Details of the official book launch and availability in Australia will be published when they become available.
